Jance Henry Leads Wave of Ineligible Rulings by WPIAL

Three-star running back Jance Henry from Moon Area, Pennsylvania, is at the forefront of a recent series of ineligibility rulings issued by the WPIAL. The class of 2027 standout has been deemed ineligible for the 2026 season following the decision that his transfer from Archbishop Hoban in Ohio did not align with WPIAL's eligibility criteria.

Originally hailing from Pennsylvania, Henry spent his junior year at a school in Akron, Ohio, where he played a pivotal role in leading his team to the OHSAA Division 2 regional final in 2025, a match they lost to Walsh Jesuit. Over the course of the season, he accumulated 753 rushing yards and scored six touchdowns. "Senior Jance Henry was ruled ineligible for football at Moon after transferring from Archbishop Hoban in Ohio," reported the Post-Gazette. Henry, who plays both running back and linebacker, has already committed to Bowling Green for college football, turning down offers from several major Division I programs.

Henry made his commitment to Bowling Green public in March, after an official visit with the Falcons in June. His decision came amid interest from schools like UNLV, UNC, Michigan State, Syracuse, and Ole Miss. In addition to Henry, seven other athletes have also been ruled ineligible for the upcoming season, including Pine-Richland's linebacker Zion Smith and wide receiver Kylen Taylor, as well as Beaver's quarterback Jaivin Peel.

Peel's situation is particularly notable; throughout his varsity career, he has transferred multiple times—over five, to be precise. Starting at Midland Lincoln Park, he moved to Central Catholic shortly before returning to his original school. He later played for Western Beaver and transferred to Kiski School before finally settling at Beaver for the upcoming season. WPIAL executive director Vince Sortino raised concerns about the frequency of these transfers, questioning, "Are you physically buying houses in every district you move into? Do you have rentals? Are there contracts? Are there bankruptcies involved?”

The athletes affected by these rulings include Henry, Peel, Smith, Taylor, junior wrestler Ryder Carr, sophomore basketball players Amaizen Straughters and Jordyn Kelly, as well as Robert Mrozek. Each athlete has the right to appeal the ruling and can request a hearing to contest their ineligibility.
