Jessica Pegula Sets Sights on Overcoming Wimbledon Hurdles
July 1, 2025; Wimbledon, UNITED KINGDOM; Jessica Pegula of the United States showcased her skills during her match against Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on day two. While the American tennis player is proud of her achievements on grass courts, she is eager to expand her trophy collection. Currently, Pegula is competing at the Berlin Tennis Open as she gears up for Wimbledon.
As the No. 3 seed, Pegula recently reached the quarterfinals and shared her thoughts on her grass-court journey during an on-court interview. Over the past couple of years, she has excelled on grass, particularly in Germany, where she claimed her first grass-court title in 2024 after a remarkable comeback from a neck injury.
Although she faced a disappointing first-round exit at Wimbledon in 2025, Pegula redeemed herself by winning the Bad Homburg Open the following week, defeating Iga Świątek in the final. Reflecting on her experiences, she admitted, “Well, I like the German grass. Very specific. My results have seemed to just show that… that I like the German grass only.”
Despite her success in Germany, Pegula expressed her ambition to claim a title at Wimbledon and change her current record. “Hopefully in a couple of weeks, I can change that over into maybe some British grass,” she added with a laugh. She also reminisced about her victory in Berlin, saying it reinforced her confidence after her injury setback.
Pegula faces a challenging draw this year, with her next match against the winner of Madison Keys and Karolína Muchová. Additionally, she is teaming up with Coco Gauff in doubles, scheduled to compete against Fanny Stollár and Asia Muhammad for a spot in the semifinals. The Berlin Tennis Open marks Pegula's sole preparation event before heading to Wimbledon, as she will not be defending her title in Bad Homburg.
