Joey Volchko Dominates on the Mound in Georgia's 7-1 Victory Over Texas
The aspirations of the Texas Longhorns for a successful run in the College World Series took a significant hit on Saturday at Charles Schwab Field, as they suffered a 7-1 defeat to the Georgia Bulldogs. Right-handed pitcher Joey Volchko showcased an exceptional performance, achieving a career-high of 15 strikeouts in a complete game, marking Georgia's first win in Omaha since 2008.
Volchko established his dominance from the outset, striking out the first three Texas batters he encountered. Throughout the game, he maintained his command, effectively mixing in strikes and utilizing his glove-side run on his four-seam fastball along with a powerful slider. Out of the 114 pitches he threw, an impressive 84 were strikes, while Texas could only muster four hits, with sophomore shortstop Adrian Rodriguez contributing two of those. Rodriguez managed to score the Longhorns' sole run in the fifth inning, but Volchko’s performance kept Texas from drawing more than a single walk.
The Bulldogs capitalized on early errors from Texas, as sophomore left-hander Dylan Volantis struggled with his control in the first inning. Volantis walked the opening batter and then surrendered a line-drive home run to center fielder Rylan Lujo, which hit the left field foul pole. Following that, Volantis’ troubles continued with a wild throw from junior catcher Carson Tinney, allowing Georgia to extend their lead after recording an unearned run. By the end of the first inning, the Bulldogs had established a commanding 4-0 lead, despite having only one hit.
As the game progressed, Volantis struggled to find the strike zone, hitting two more batters and allowing his first hit in the seventh inning, which led to additional runs due to a costly error by junior third baseman Casey Borba. Texas’s top four batters failed to find any success, combining for an abysmal 0-for-15 with 11 strikeouts. The Longhorns also dealt with adversity when junior designated hitter Ethan Mendoza exited the game in the eighth inning due to injury after hitting a single.
With their season hanging in the balance, Texas is set to face Alabama in an elimination game on Monday at 1 p.m. Central. The Crimson Tide are coming off a loss to the Sooners, falling 9-0 earlier on Saturday.
