Jonquel Jones Shines as Liberty Defeats Tempo for Third Consecutive Victory
NEW YORK (AP) — Jonquel Jones delivered an impressive performance with 22 points and 17 rebounds, leading the New York Liberty to a 97-82 victory over the Toronto Tempo on Wednesday night. Breanna Stewart contributed significantly as well, scoring 19 points, with 17 of those coming in the second half, helping the Liberty improve their record to 6-4 with three consecutive wins. The team continues to cope without guard Sabrina Ionescu, who is currently sidelined due to a back injury. Coach Chris DeMarco noted during the morning shootaround that Ionescu is making progress but has only participated in one game this season.
The matchup also marked the return of Sandy Brondello, the former Liberty coach who led the team to its inaugural WNBA championship in 2024. After being released following last season, Brondello now coaches the expansion Tempo, which has had a solid start to the season. She received a warm welcome from fans as she was introduced prior to the game. Unfortunately for the Tempo, this loss dropped their record to 5-5, halting a two-game winning streak.
New York initially found themselves trailing 22-17 in the second quarter before igniting a 15-2 run, highlighted by two three-pointers from Satou Sabally. The first was particularly notable as it was taken over her sister Nyara, who was selected by the Tempo in the expansion draft. At halftime, the Liberty held a 40-34 lead, with Jones having an outstanding first half that included 17 points and 12 rebounds. The Liberty solidified their dominance in the third quarter, with Stewart scoring nine points after a quiet first half, extending the lead to 70-58.
In a concerning moment for Toronto, rookie Kiki Rice experienced a scare late in the game when her shot was blocked, causing her right leg to twist awkwardly upon landing. The No. 6 draft pick was down for a brief period but managed to get up and limp off the court. Meanwhile, Marina Mabrey and Brittney Sykes each led the Tempo with 17 points.
Looking ahead, the Tempo will host the Chicago Sky on Sunday, while the Liberty are set to face Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on Saturday night.
