Kai Roberts Flourishes in Professional Baseball After Ute Career
FRISCO, Texas — Former University of Utah outfielder Kai Roberts, who has taken a unique path in his baseball journey, is now making strides in the professional ranks with the Double-A San Antonio Missions, part of the San Diego Padres organization. Despite his father, Ryan, being a former BYU player and coach, Roberts chose to don the Utes' colors, a decision he reflects on fondly. “I loved college, loved the coaches at the University of Utah. The relationships I made there with teammates and coaches will last a lifetime,” said the 25-year-old.
Roberts enjoyed a standout collegiate career, showcasing his versatility by playing multiple positions during his freshman year in 2021. By his senior season, he emerged as a key player, starting 55 games and achieving impressive stats, including a .356 batting average, seven home runs, and 58 RBIs. His 33 stolen bases set a new single-season record for the Utes, bringing his career total to 66, another milestone for the program.
His passion for the game, particularly the intense rivalry with BYU, is evident. “That rivalry is so fun and so special to me with my background,” he remarked, acknowledging his family's ties to BYU. "Playing BYU in those midweek games was very cool." Roberts also cites former Ute C.J. Cron as a significant influence, saying, “He’s definitely a legend at the University of Utah. It’s really cool being able to look up to him.”
Drafted in the seventh round of the 2024 amateur draft, Roberts began his professional baseball career with Low Single-A Lake Elsinore, where he batted .340 in 24 games. His journey has seen him navigate challenges, including an injury that led to a brief stint in the Arizona Complex League. Now, as he progresses in Double-A, he expresses enthusiasm for the opportunities ahead. “It’s been fun... I'm just grateful and honored to still be able to come out here every day and play the game that I love,” he said.
A significant change in Roberts' life since entering professional baseball is his marriage to Kyla. He describes how this relationship has positively impacted his perspective on the game and life. “My wife plays a huge role in my career,” he shared, emphasizing her emotional support. On his off days, the couple enjoys exploring their new home in San Antonio, enhancing his overall experience in the sport.
