Kansas City Royals Bolster Pitching Staff with Randy Dobnak Acquisition

The Kansas City Royals are seeking to strengthen their struggling starting rotation, which has faced a combination of injuries and underperformance this season. After a recent victory against the Washington Nationals, the team holds a disappointing 30-45 record, prompting them to consider trades as the deadline approaches. To enhance their pitching lineup, Kansas City made a notable acquisition on Wednesday.

The Royals announced on social media that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Randy Dobnak from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations. Dobnak has been added to the 40-man roster and will head to the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Royals' Triple-A affiliate.

As part of this transaction, left-hander Cole Ragans has been placed on the 60-day injured list to create space on the roster for Dobnak. Prior to the trade, Dobnak had been pitching in Triple-A for Seattle, where he made 13 starts with a 4.24 ERA and recorded 39 strikeouts over 70 innings. Known for his ability to induce ground balls and weak contact, Dobnak’s skill set fits the team's needs.

With five seasons of experience in Major League Baseball, primarily with the Minnesota Twins since his debut in 2019, Dobnak has served as both a starter and reliever. He holds a career ERA of 4.86, although he had a promising start to his career with an ERA below 4.00 in his first two seasons before transitioning to the bullpen. At just 31 years old, he still has the potential to contribute significantly.

The Royals have been grappling with injuries to their three All-Star pitchers, including Ragans, Seth Lugo, and Kris Bubic, since early May. As the team relies on depth options to fill the rotation, Dobnak's arrival could provide a much-needed boost. Should he excel in Omaha, he may soon find himself back on the major league mound in Kansas City.
