Lakers Undergoing ‘Full Rebuild and Retool’ This Offseason
After a tough end to the season, the Los Angeles Lakers are making some major changes.
Yaron Weitzman of Yahoo! Sports reports that Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter, who recently also acquired a majority stake in the Lakers, is bringing the two storied organizations closer together.
After being swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Lakers realized they need to make some changes, according to president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka.
“It’s a full rebuild and retool,” Pelinka told reporters while discussing the Lakers’ collaboration with the Dodgers. “It’s adding to the great things that are already here, which have led to success, but elevating it and bringing it to the next level.”
What changes are the Lakers making?
It’s unclear exactly what a “full rebuild and retool” will entail.
Stars Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, for instance, probably aren’t going anywhere, even as Reaves is a free agent.
Other players like Rui Hachimura and Luke Kennard said they’re also open to coming back.
And LeBron James’ future remains unknown, though a return to the Lakers is very possible.
With a possible core already determined, it seems likely those big changes will happen mostly in the front office.
Weitzman’s report included some details about changes already underway, like Reaves’ working with the Dodgers when rehabbing his oblique injury during the playoffs.
“We’re working in collaboration with some of the Dodgers folks to bring in a biomechanics lab,” Pelinka said.
By the sounds of things, that won’t be the last Dodgers-driven innovation coming to the Lakers.
