Lakers Weigh Future of Austin Reaves Amid Luka Doncic Partnership

The Los Angeles Lakers face a pivotal offseason decision regarding the future of standout guard Austin Reaves. If he maintains his health, Reaves is expected to be a strong candidate for the All-Star team in 2025. He has established himself as a reliable player, consistently capable of scoring and creating offensive opportunities at a high level. While he may not possess elite athleticism, Reaves compensates with his smart decision-making and awareness on the court. Crucially, he enjoys the support of franchise star Luka Doncic, who has expressed his enthusiasm for playing alongside the emerging free agent.

Despite concerns circulating in the basketball community about the defensive effectiveness of a Doncic-Reaves backcourt, the Lakers' front office remains optimistic. According to Dan Woike, a Lakers beat writer for The Athletic, team insiders believe that with improvements made to other positions, the defensive limitations of this pairing are exaggerated. “Provided the Lakers address other needs on the wing and at the rim, defensive concerns about a Dončić-and-Reaves pairing are overstated," Woike noted, citing a source within the organization. Furthermore, Reaves is recognized as a vital leader in the locker room, with his influence growing each season.

As the Lakers consider their financial strategy, a key question arises: how much will it cost to retain Reaves? On the open market, he could command a four-year deal worth $178 million, translating to approximately $44 million annually. Conversely, the Lakers have the option to offer him a five-year contract totaling $241 million, equating to around $48 million per year. Although Reaves has indicated a willingness to give the Lakers a discount, his agency is advocating for him to secure the best possible financial deal. Given Reaves' integral role in the team's structure, it seems likely he will sign for more than $40 million per season.
