Landon Donovan Reveals Unexpected Insights from Coaching Women’s Soccer

Soccer icon Landon Donovan recently shared a revealing insight from his coaching journey, emphasizing his preference for guiding women on the field. During an event at Raising Cane’s new flagship restaurant in Inglewood, held on June 9, Donovan reflected on his unique experiences while coaching the San Diego Wave FC, a role he took on in August 2024.

When asked which aspect of his career has been the most enlightening, Donovan pointed to his time with the Wave, noting that it significantly transformed his perspective. “That actually was coaching the San Diego W,” he remarked. “I learned a lot about myself doing it.” One of the most notable surprises for him was his clear preference for coaching women rather than men. “I much, much, much prefer coaching women to men,” he stated candidly.

Donovan elaborated that the differences he observed were primarily related to engagement and communication. He found that the women he coached were more invested during meetings and eager to absorb information. “They were more engaged,” he noted, adding that they seemed more enthusiastic about learning. In contrast, he humorously mentioned that the men's focus often wavered after just a few minutes in discussions. “The guys after like eight minutes in a meeting…” he trailed off, chuckling.

This coaching experience not only enriched Donovan’s understanding of effective coaching techniques but also provided him with personal insights. He drew parallels to his family life, observing similar dynamics between his sons and daughter. “I see it with my boys too versus my girl,” he commented, hinting at how these interactions have influenced his views.

Beyond his coaching endeavors, Donovan is also making waves as a celebrity ambassador for Raising Cane’s, participating in their “Kick It with Cane’s” summer campaign. His presence at the new restaurant, strategically located near major sports venues, underscores his ongoing connection to the sport and the community.
