Logan Thompson of Capitals Ties for 23rd in Hart Trophy Voting
Logan Thompson, the goaltender for the Washington Capitals, has garnered additional accolades for his impressive performance during the 2025-26 NHL season, finishing tied for 23rd in the Hart Trophy voting. This prestigious award is given to the player deemed most valuable to their team, as determined by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Nikita Kucherov was named the winner of the Hart Trophy for this season.
Thompson secured one fifth-place vote, joining other notable players such as Jack Hughes from the New Jersey Devils, Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche, and Ilya Sorokin from the New York Islanders in the MVP race.
At 29 years old, Thompson's journey to the NHL has been remarkable, especially as he went undrafted before making his mark in professional hockey. Last season, he played in 58 matches for the Capitals, achieving 31 victories and posting a .912 save percentage, the highest among NHL goalies with a minimum of 46 games played. His goals-against average (GAA) stood at 2.44, complemented by four shutouts. Thompson also had the honor of representing Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina.
In addition to his Hart Trophy recognition, Thompson placed fourth in the Vezina Trophy voting for the second year in a row, with Andrei Vasilevskiy winning the honor for the league's top goaltender. Unfortunately, despite Thompson's stellar contributions, the Capitals narrowly missed out on a playoff spot, facing a challenging season marred by injuries.
Reflecting on his performance, Thompson expressed satisfaction with his season, stating, "Body felt as best as it's ever been... I felt really good." He emphasized his enjoyment of playing frequently and the positive atmosphere in Washington, crediting team owner Ted Leonsis and coaches Chris Patrick and Spencer Carbery for their support. "I think I'm just more free here. I have a lot more fun playing, and I think I love living in this city," he added, highlighting the impact of his environment on his game.
