Mac Jones Takes Time Off to Manage Arm Discomfort

The San Francisco 49ers have decided to cancel their mandatory minicamp scheduled for next week, concluding their offseason program on Thursday. During this period, backup quarterback Mac Jones has refrained from throwing as he deals with some soreness in his throwing arm.

Despite the discomfort, Jones remains optimistic about his condition. "Just a little soreness in my shoulder," he explained on Wednesday, as reported by David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. "Everything's clean and looks good, so just kind of being precautionary, I guess is the word. But yeah, I'll be ready for training camp."

At 27 years old, Jones stepped in for Brock Purdy in eight games last season, leading the team to a 5-3 record during his starts. His performance sparked trade speculation over the offseason, but the 49ers have reassured him that they are not looking to move him. While he aspires for another chance as a starter, Jones appreciates his current situation. "I also love it here, and I'm not really in the business of leaving good people," he remarked. "I think it's a great organization, and I did a lot of fun stuff last year, but it's a new year."

Emphasizing the advantage of continuity, Jones noted, "This is the first year I've had the same offensive playbook, being in the NFL, so that's kind of nice." He expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming summer and the opportunity to continue developing with the team. As he heads into the final year of his contract, the 49ers have also granted him a pay increase for 2026.
