Maccabi and Hapoel Tel Aviv Advance to Finals After Semi-Final Sweeps
Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv have both secured their spots in the finals of the Israeli Basketball League, each completing 3-0 sweeps in their respective semi-final series. Maccabi dominated Hapoel Holon with a decisive 89-61 victory, while Hapoel overcame Hapoel Jerusalem with an 89-81 win, setting the stage for a highly anticipated championship showdown beginning Tuesday at Yad Eliyahu.
Maccabi Tel Aviv showcased their strength, particularly in the second half, pulling away after leading by only seven points at halftime. Jaylen Hoard led the scoring with 18 points, supported by Jimmy Clark and Zach Hankins, who each contributed 14 points. Roman Sorkin added 13 points to the tally. For Holon, Jordan Wright and Adama Sanogo scored 14 and 12 points, respectively. Maccabi's coach Oded Katash expressed pride in his team's progression, stating, "We continued to improve from game to game despite injuries and other challenges. The players deserve a lot of credit."
Katash highlighted the importance of rebounding and defensive effort in achieving the sweep but noted injury concerns as they head into the finals, with Gur Lavy and TJ Leaf sidelined, while Tamir Blatt may return later.
Hapoel Tel Aviv also finished their semi-final series with a strong performance, defeating Hapoel Jerusalem 89-81. The match remained closely contested until Hapoel pulled away in the fourth quarter, led by Vasilije Micic's 26 points and Yam Madar's 22. Nimrod Levi was the standout for Jerusalem, scoring 22 points. Hapoel's coach Dimitrios Itoudis praised his team's performance, emphasizing their dominance on the boards and in key moments.
Hapoel Jerusalem's coach Yonatan Alon reflected on a tough season, acknowledging the challenges they faced, while Madar expressed enthusiasm for the finals, stating, "I’m really happy. There was pressure on us, but we got the job done.” As the two teams prepare for a fierce competition, the rivalry between Maccabi and Hapoel Tel Aviv promises to add excitement to the finals.
