Mayo Dominates Becker in State Boys Tennis Quarterfinals

MINNEAPOLIS — The Mayo Spartans, ranked as the third seed, showcased their prowess in the Class 2A state boys team tennis tournament by overwhelming unseeded Becker with a decisive 7-0 victory on Tuesday. Every match was won in straight sets at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center, solidifying Mayo's reputation as a formidable contender in high school tennis.

The Spartans improved their season record to an impressive 20-1 and are set to face the second-seeded Edina in the semifinals scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday. This upcoming match will be a rematch from last year's tournament when Edina narrowly defeated Mayo 4-3 in a thrilling encounter.

The winner of the Mayo-Edina semifinal will advance to the state championship match at 4 p.m., while the losing team will compete for third place at 2 p.m. In other quarterfinal matches, Edina also secured a 7-0 win against unseeded St. Thomas Academy, No. 4 seed Mounds View triumphed over No. 5 Eden Prairie 5-2, and top-seeded Wayzata, the three-time defending champions, swept unseeded Blaine 7-0.

Mayo's only defeat this season came at the hands of Wayzata, where they lost 7-0.
