Mets Dominate Padres 5-0 with Strong Pitching and Power Hitting
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The New York Mets secured a convincing 5-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night, propelled by a stellar performance from pitcher Christian Scott and timely home runs from Jared Young and Luis Torrens. This win marks the Mets' sixth triumph in their last eight games.
Scott (2-0) delivered an impressive outing, tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings and setting a franchise record by allowing four runs or fewer in 17 consecutive starts. He recorded three strikeouts and issued two walks, while surrendering just three hits. The Mets' bullpen, featuring Huascar Brazobán, Luke Weaver, and A.J. Minter, effectively closed out the game, denying the Padres their 10th loss in 11 contests.
The Padres faced a tough matchup, with Michael King (4-5), a notable player acquired in the trade that sent Juan Soto to San Diego, taking the loss after giving up four runs on six hits, alongside four strikeouts, marking his third consecutive defeat.
New York took the lead early, as Young launched a full-count changeup in the second inning for his third home run of the season, all since returning from the injured list on May 26. The Mets extended their advantage in the third inning when Torrens doubled and later scored on Bo Bichette’s two-out triple, bringing his RBI total to three in just two games. This recent surge has seen Bichette tally 14 RBIs over his last 17 games.
In the fifth, Torrens, who began his Major League career with the Padres in 2017, hit his first homer of the season, driving in Brett Baty and putting the Mets ahead 4-0. Baty later added an RBI single in the ninth inning to round out the scoring. The Padres managed only three singles and five baserunners throughout the game, with just one player reaching scoring position, resulting in their seventh shutout of the season and third since late May.
Looking ahead, the Mets' Nolan McLean (3-4, 4.21 ERA) is set to face the Padres' Griffin Canning (0-4, 7.16) in the upcoming matchup.
