Mets' Francisco Alvarez Shines in Rehab Game, Tobias Myers Secures Win for Triple-A Syracuse
Francisco Alvarez made his return behind the plate on Sunday as part of his ongoing minor league rehabilitation stint with Triple-A Syracuse. The 24-year-old catcher had been seeking a turnaround after struggling at the plate in his previous two games without a hit. Although he was initially retired in his first two at-bats, Alvarez showed resilience by drawing a walk before eventually being left on base.
In the top of the eighth inning, Alvarez connected with a fastball, sending it sharply back through the middle, and later scored following a home run by Matt Rudick. Earlier in the game, Syracuse had briefly taken the lead courtesy of a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Clifford that drove in a run. Alvarez concluded the game with a 1-for-3 hitting performance, including a walk and a successful back-pick to catch a runner off first base.
The Mets have not provided a specific timeline for Alvarez's return to the major league roster, but if his recovery continues to progress well, he could rejoin the team during the upcoming six-game homestand.
On the pitching side, Zach Thornton highlighted the day with a strong outing, throwing five scoreless innings while allowing only two walks and two hits, complemented by five strikeouts. Tobias Myers contributed in relief, yielding just one unearned run and striking out one over two innings in his second outing since being sent down from the Mets. Dylan Ross was called in for the ninth inning, where he faced some challenges but ultimately secured his first save despite issuing two walks and allowing an RBI double before striking out George Lombard Jr. to close out the game. This season, Ross has accumulated 16 walks over 18 appearances.
