Mets Suffer Heavy Defeat as Myers Struggles in Loss to Reds

The New York Mets faced a significant setback on Monday night, suffering a 12-0 defeat to the Cincinnati Reds. This loss marks their most lopsided shutout since falling 15-0 to the Nationals on August 26, 2018.

Tobias Myers made a challenging return from the minors, enduring a rough outing as the opener. He surrendered seven runs in just 1.1 innings of play. The first inning began poorly for Myers, who allowed a leadoff double and then issued a walk. The Reds capitalized on this by executing a double steal, leading to an early run from Spencer Steer’s groundout. Eugenio Suárez then extended the lead with a two-run homer, pushing the score to 3-0.

Things did not improve for Myers in the second inning. After a bunt single loaded the bases with no outs, he walked in another run, making it 4-0. Myers concluded his outing having given up four hits over 43 pitches, with only one strikeout and four walks. Jonathan Pintaro stepped in to relieve him but only exacerbated the situation, as Sal Stewart added another run with an RBI single, followed by Suárez hitting a grand slam, increasing the score to 9-0.

On the offensive side, Bo Bichette shone with a double in the first inning against Chase Burns, who then settled down to retire eight consecutive Mets batters through the third. Bichette managed another double in the fourth, but despite loading the bases, the Mets could not capitalize, with Marcus Semien popping out and Brett Baty striking out to end the inning. New York continued to struggle, stranding two more runners in the sixth and three in the seventh, totaling 12 left on base while finishing just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

David Peterson entered the game in the sixth and nearly held the Reds scoreless, but allowed a three-run homer to JJ Bleday in the eighth, sealing the Mets' fate. Chase Burns was the standout player, throwing five scoreless innings and recording seven strikeouts.

The Mets will look to rebound as they continue their three-game series against the Reds on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. Kodai Senga, returning from the injured list, will take the mound against Brady Singer.
