Mexico Edges Australia 1-0 in Pre-World Cup Showdown at Rose Bowl
On Saturday, the Rose Bowl buzzed with excitement as Mexico triumphed over Australia 1-0 in a friendly match serving as a warm-up for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. With the stadium nearly filled to capacity, around 75,000 fans erupted in cheers, celebrating Team Mexico's victory.
The thrilling moment ignited jubilation among supporters, who expressed their deep connection to the team and the sport. "They're amazing. They're fast. They're good players. They have good energy. All good things," remarked Deona Wiles, who attended the match with family and friends.
The atmosphere was electric, with fans chanting "Viva Mexico!" as they rallied behind their team. This event marked Mexico's last game in the U.S. before heading to the World Cup, drawing fans from all corners of California. Rick Yanez, who made the journey from Bakersfield, shared, "I grew up watching it. My dad loved watching it, so I'd always watch it. I've been a Mexican fan since I was a kid." He added, "Everyone is excited, it's World Cup season. It's going to be a great summer of soccer. We're happy."
Beyond the match itself, pregame festivities fostered a sense of community among attendees. Tania Gonzalez from Santa Clarita noted, "It's rough what we are going through as a country, in the world, and so it's OK to just detach from that and come together and heal part of the community."
Fans admired the vibrant environment, with Lawrence Cooper commenting, "The atmosphere is amazing. It's vibrant. Mexico people lovely, friendly, very welcome." Aldahar Madrid of Fontana added, "We're going out tonight. We're having a great time, and we're turning up -- the city of L.A."
The FIFA World Cup is set to kick off next month, with matches taking place across 16 cities in North America, including Los Angeles.
