Michigan State Hockey Assistant Coach Remains After Harvard Search Concludes
Michigan State's hockey program has successfully retained its top assistant coach, Jared DeMichiel, following speculation about his potential departure for a head coaching opportunity at Harvard. The search for Harvard's new head coach has progressed, and reports from John Buccigross indicate that DeMichiel is no longer among the finalists for the position.
It remains unclear whether DeMichiel opted out of the running or was not selected, but this development is a significant win for the Spartans. Since joining Michigan State in 2022 alongside head coach Adam Nightingale, DeMichiel has established himself as a vital member of the coaching staff. Prior to his time in East Lansing, he enjoyed a successful stint at UMass from 2016 to 2022, where he was part of a national championship team in 2021. His playing career at RIT saw him earn the NCAA Tournament's Most Valuable Player award in 2010.
While DeMichiel’s impressive track record suggests that a head coaching role is in his future, for now, he will continue to support the Spartans. Meanwhile, Harvard's search has narrowed to three candidates: Jason Lammers of Niagara, Jason Tapp from Dartmouth, and Rob Rassey from Michigan, highlighting the competitive nature of coaching positions in college hockey.
As the landscape of college hockey coaching continues to evolve, the Spartans are relieved to maintain their coaching continuity with DeMichiel's ongoing presence.
