The Middletown baseball team continues its remarkable playoff journey, now just one win away from clinching the Division II title. Following a thrilling walk-off victory against Narragansett on Friday, the fourth-seeded Islanders faced off against top-seeded East Greenwich on Sunday, emerging victorious with a 4-0 score.
Right from the start, Middletown showcased their determination, scoring three runs in the second inning. Michael Lisella kicked things off with a sacrifice fly, giving the Islanders a 1-0 advantage, which was extended by two more runs from passed balls. Pitcher Cameron Carlisle, who was pivotal in Friday's success, dominated on the mound, allowing only three hits and three walks over seven innings.
East Greenwich's Ayaan Modi put in a commendable effort in relief, throwing four innings of one-hit ball and striking out three batters. However, it wasn't enough to secure a win for the Avengers. With this triumph, Middletown will host East Greenwich again on Monday at Gaudet Middle School at 4:30 p.m.
In other playoff action, top-seeded Hendricken triumphed over North Kingstown with an 8-0 score, while East Providence edged out La Salle 1-0. North Providence secured a spot in the afternoon's losers’ final by defeating Chariho 6-1, led by a stellar performance from Alex Dieffenbach.
West Warwick also made headlines, defeating North Providence 8-1, thanks to Adrian Gonzalez's strong pitching and Anthony Burt's two-run double. The Wizards are now set to advance to the Division II Championship series, awaiting the outcome of Monday’s matchup between East Greenwich and Middletown.
In the Division III Pod 1 Championship, Woonsocket cruised to a 9-0 victory over Classical, with Patrick Munger throwing a no-hitter. Meanwhile, Exeter-West Greenwich claimed a tense 7-6 win against BVPCF, thanks to Tyler Medeiros’ clutch performance in the seventh inning. Both teams are gearing up for their next challenges in the championship series.
