Mikal Bridges Reflects on Kendrick Lamar's Album as a Source of Strength During Tough Times
Mikal Bridges of the New York Knicks is still riding high from the team's recent NBA championship victory, and he took to IG Live on Monday to share his thoughts with fans. In a candid moment captured by viewers, Bridges poured himself a shot of tequila as Kendrick Lamar's track "Count Me Out" played, expressing his deep appreciation for the song and the album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.
“Let me let you know, let me be honest about this song, about this album, if y’all can hear me right now over this music,” he said, reflecting on a challenging period in his career. Bridges opened up about feeling down after the Phoenix Suns were eliminated by the Dallas Mavericks in seven games during the 2022 NBA Playoffs. “I was really depressed, bro. We lost to Dallas, I was in Phoenix, I was f—in’ depressed, bro. This album came out. I was just liftin’ bi’s and tri’s, chest, and that sh– got me through it. I love this f—in’ album, for real. I will never forget this album. Ever.”
As he continued to enjoy the moment, Bridges rapped along with Lamar’s lyrics, “I love when you count me out,” a sentiment that resonates with him, especially following the past season. The Knicks made a significant commitment to Bridges, trading six first-round draft picks to acquire him from the Brooklyn Nets in 2024, and later signing him to an extension in 2026. Following the Knicks' first championship win in 53 years, fans have affectionately dubbed him Mikal “F— Them Picks” Bridges.
This connection between music and personal experiences highlights how athletes often find solace and motivation in their favorite songs during tough times.
