Mike Trout gives surprising response when asked if he would waive his no-trade clause

We know where to find Mike Trout five years after his retirement: Cooperstown, New York. It’s clear that the outfielder will be inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame wearing a Los Angeles Angels hat on his plaque. But will he retire as a member of the Angels? Having the All-Star Game in Philadelphia has only served to place greater emphasis on the answer to that question.

When asked about waiving his no-trade clause on Monday, he had a surprising response. He’s way too classy to outwardly ask for a trade, but his response in talking about Philadelphia being his home is quite intriguing and interesting. It shouldn’t be a surprise that Trout wants to go home to join the Phillies and top off his career by playing games that matter.

Trout has had multiple opportunities to move on from the Angels. Given their struggles, the outfielder could very easily ask for, or demand, a trade. However, that’s simply not Trout’s style. Instead, year after year of Trout’s career has been wasted.

Previously, Trout hadn’t shown any indication of wanting to move from Los Angeles. He’s been too loyal and has spoken highly of the desire to finish his career with one team.

However, if anything, the Angels continue to go backward, and Trout isn’t getting healthier or younger. This season has actually gone quite well for Trout despite the fact that he’s turning 35 next month.

While Trout is only hitting .237, he has 18 home runs, 39 RBI, 58 runs scored, and seven stolen bases. It’s clear that the outfielder still has real value to offer a team, and it’s certainly being wasted on Angels team languishing in last place.

Trout wouldn’t be human if he wasn’t becoming increasingly frustrated by not having a chance to win a World Series ring. At this point, his chances of winning a championship are dwindling, so it’s only natural to seek a trade.

Yes, there’s something to be said for playing on just one team in your career, but Trout deserves better, and why shouldn’t he get a chance to go home?
