NASCAR Remembers Kyle Busch as Racing Continues at Nashville Superspeedway

LEBANON – “It’s still tough,” reflected NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace, acknowledging the ongoing grief within the racing community. The absence of his friend Kyle Busch loomed large in the minds of many, prompting thoughts of missed conversations and the impact of Busch's untimely passing. “It’s during times like these you wish you could fast-forward to Sundays, to escape everything for a little while,” Wallace remarked, recalling advice from racing legend Richard Petty, who once told him, “It’s not work when you get in the car.”

On May 31, the Nashville Superspeedway hosted the Cracker Barrel 400, which was ultimately claimed by Denny Hamlin, who started from the pole position. The atmosphere was bittersweet, as NASCAR returned to Middle Tennessee during a period of profound sorrow following the unexpected death of Busch from pneumonia that developed into sepsis on May 21.

For many in the sport, it was a stark reminder of life's fragility beyond the racetrack. Kyle Larson shared, “It just reminds you that there's more life outside of just racing… Enjoy your time on this earth, because you never know when your time is up.” Three days after Busch's death, NASCAR proceeded with the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, an event Busch would have supported, according to the drivers. Wallace noted, “Had we not raced, I think Busch would have had some choice words.”

Chase Elliott echoed the sentiment, stating, “It was really weird not having Kyle there in Charlotte, and it’s still weird not having him here this weekend.” The memories of Busch were palpable throughout Nashville, a venue where he famously celebrated a victory by smashing a Les Paul guitar in 2009. This weekend, tributes to Busch were evident everywhere, from merchandise to a moment of silence during the eighth lap of the race.

The weekend was marked by gestures honoring Busch's legacy, including previous race winners Layne Riggs and Justin Allgaier acknowledging his celebratory style, and honorary pace car rider Gavin Adcock expressing his long-standing admiration for Busch. “It’ll be kind of bittersweet going out there,” he said, donning a black “Rowdy” tank top in tribute to the late driver.
