NASCAR will look different for the Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway in August. On Wednesday, NASCAR announced a new superspeedway package for the Cup Series starting at Daytona. The package is designed to improve passing opportunities throughout the event.

The rear spoiler will be shortened from seven to four inches, which is the same height as intermediate tracks. This is an effort to reduce drag, while the reduction in horsepower from 510 to 465 will be for reduced downforce. According to NASCAR, the single-car speeds will be roughly three miles per hour faster than the current package.

Despite all of these changes, NASCAR anticipates the same speeds when all of the cars are in the same pack. The rule changes should help promote more passing on superspeedway tracks, instead of relying on track position. Hopefully, NASCAR can get back to pure superspeedway racing, and Daytona will be the first challenge.
