NC State Wolfpack Falls to Auburn, Ending Season with 17-13 Defeat
The NC State Wolfpack's baseball season came to a disappointing close on Saturday, as they lost 17-13 to the Auburn Tigers during the NCAA Regional Baseball tournament held at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Alabama. The defeat marked a tough end for the Wolfpack, who struggled significantly on the mound throughout the game.
Starting pitcher Cooper Consiglio had a challenging outing, lasting only a third of an inning while allowing eight runs to cross the plate. The Wolfpack quickly found themselves in a daunting 10-0 hole before they could begin to stabilize their performance. Despite the rocky start, NC State rallied impressively, narrowing the gap to 10-7 after a five-run third inning that featured a two-run homer from Dalton Bargo.
However, the Wolfpack's pitching woes continued as Auburn responded with seven unanswered runs. Heath Andrews, who came in to relieve Consiglio, struggled in the sixth inning, and the subsequent pitcher also failed to contain the Tigers’ offense. The lack of effective pitching has been a recurring theme for NC State, which had already experienced difficulties during the regular season and the ACC tournament.
The final blow came in a rather unusual fashion, as the last strike of the game was called due to a batter's clock violation, providing a fittingly absurd ending to a challenging weekend for NC State. This loss not only concluded the season for the Wolfpack but also marked the end of head coach Elliott Avent's tenure with the program.
