NCAA Renders Former Dayton Basketball Player Adam Njie Jr. Permanently Ineligible Due to Betting Violations
The NCAA has announced that Adam Njie Jr., a former player for the University of Dayton men's basketball team, has been deemed permanently ineligible to participate in college athletics.
According to an agreement released by the Division I Committee on Infractions panel, Njie, while a member of the Iona basketball program, provided sensitive game information to known sports gamblers. The NCAA disclosed findings from its investigation into Njie during a press release on Thursday.
In July and September of 2025, NCAA enforcement officials interviewed a source linked to a separate sports betting case who was aware of Njie's interactions with two bettors. The source indicated that one of these bettors had communicated directly with Njie regarding betting activities.
The enforcement team collaborated with gambling regulators to trace wagers placed by the bettors, revealing that they had bet a total of $15,500 on another team to cover the first-half spread against Iona in December 2024. Njie admitted to informing the bettor that he would intentionally underperform in the first half of a game, although he ultimately did not follow through on that threat. Following the game, the bettor allegedly threatened Njie with physical harm, prompting him to suggest that he would throw the first half of Iona's subsequent game in an attempt to make up for the bettor's losses—again, a plan he did not execute.
The NCAA clarified that sharing game-related information with a bettor is strictly against its regulations and is treated as seriously as point shaving, regardless of whether the student-athlete carries out the plan. Violations of NCAA rules result in ineligibility, with reinstatement only possible through the intervention of an NCAA member institution.
Njie had transferred to the University of Dayton after one season at Iona, where he played 32 games, starting 27 of them and averaging over 12 points and 4 assists per game during the 2024-25 season. The University of Dayton confirmed that Njie departed from the team in January 2026 after being sidelined due to "potential eligibility concerns" the previous October.
