Neuer Praises Relationship with Baumann Amid National Team Dynamics
Germany's goalkeeper Manuel Neuer expressed his strong camaraderie with Oliver Baumann following Baumann's recent demotion within the national team. Neuer, who had previously stepped back from international play after Euro 2024, returned to the squad, leading to Baumann, who had been a starter in the World Cup qualifiers, taking on a backup role.
During a press conference on Thursday, Neuer highlighted the importance of their relationship, stating, "We work together every day and have a very good relationship. Especially on the field, you have to support each other." He recounted a significant conversation with Baumann at the beginning of their World Cup preparations in Herzogenaurach, where they candidly discussed their circumstances.
The 40-year-old Neuer, the sole remaining player from Germany's 2014 World Cup-winning team, took a moment to commend Jonas Urbig, who is seen as a potential future star for both the national team and Bayern Munich. Although Urbig is not officially part of the squad, he has joined the team to gain valuable experience.
Neuer remarked, "Jonas has everything in his own hands, he's on a very good path," and emphasized their close bond formed during club practice. He believes Urbig's presence is vital, saying, "I don't see him as just a back-up goalkeeper anymore, but as a full-time member of our team." Germany commenced their tournament with a decisive 7-1 victory over Curaçao and is set to face Ivory Coast on Saturday.
