New Mexico Lands First Football Offer for Dual-Sport Talent Evan Nañez
In an exciting turn for the state's athletic landscape, Evan Nañez, a standout wide receiver from Cleveland High School, has received his inaugural football scholarship offer from the University of New Mexico (UNM). Nañez shared the news on Friday through social media, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity. “Blessed to receive my first Division I football offer!” he wrote on X. He extended his thanks to UNM head coach Jason Eck and wide receiver coach Carson Walch for their faith in his abilities.
The 6-foot-1, 165-pound rising junior had a remarkable season, recording 51 receptions for 996 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also contributed 199 rushing yards and four touchdowns, playing a key role in Cleveland's state championship victory. His performance earned him a spot on the Journal's All-Metro team, which highlighted ten athletes from his school.
Nañez is not only a promising football player but also a highly regarded basketball prospect, with scholarship offers from New Mexico State, Southern Utah, and Northern New Mexico. His father, Michael Nañez, was a walk-on at NMSU during the 1998-99 season. Although Evan played basketball and attended classes at ABC Prep Academy last year, he is considering returning to Cleveland to play basketball this upcoming season, citing logistical challenges as a factor in his decision. “We just thought it was a better decision for me … It’s a lot of driving (back and forth) for me,” he commented.
The offer from UNM came during the football prospect camp last weekend, which Nañez described as an “amazing” experience. After attending the Lobos’ spring game in April, he officially received the offer following conversations with Coach Eck and the coaching staff. “I know they’ve turned it around a bit with coach Eck,” Nañez noted, acknowledging the team's recent improvements. However, he has not yet decided whether to focus on football or basketball as he moves forward. “I’m just playing all my cards right now, to be honest,” he stated. “I’m just both the sports that I love, and then I know God will take me wherever he wants to take me.”
In other news, UNM also welcomed a commitment from defensive lineman Gunner Edwards, who announced his decision on Wednesday. At 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, Edwards recorded 26 tackles last season at Frenship High School in Texas. He visited UNM last weekend before committing, joining other recent recruits who made the same choice after their visits. Edwards expressed his excitement on social media, stating, “From the moment I stepped on campus, it felt like home,” and praised the coaching staff and facilities. “Something special is happening here, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”
