Notre Dame Commit Amarri Irvin Visits Michigan State, Sparking Concerns

Amarri Irvin, a linebacker from IMG Academy and a current commit to Notre Dame, took a visit to Michigan State over the weekend, a school with deep familial ties. This visit comes as the official recruiting season for college football kicks off, although the Fighting Irish will not start their official visits until next week.

According to Jason Killop, a Michigan State reporter for On3, the 2027 recruit spent his weekend at East Lansing. Irvin's connection to Michigan State runs deep, as his father, Sedrick Irvin, was a notable running back for the Spartans during the 1990s. While Irvin has been committed to head coach Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame since November, his visit to a rival program raises questions about his commitment.

Despite his recent trip, some insiders believe there’s no immediate cause for alarm regarding Irvin's commitment to the Fighting Irish. However, any recruit exploring other options is typically a situation to monitor closely. Retaining Irvin is especially crucial for Notre Dame's coaching staff, particularly linebacker coach Brian Jean-Mary.

Irvin, who is recognized as a four-star recruit, is regarded as one of the top prospects in the 2027 class. He is currently ranked as the No. 286 player nationwide, the No. 23 linebacker, and the No. 26 player in Florida according to the 247 Sports Composite rankings. His impressive stats from last season include 36 total tackles, six tackles for loss, and four sacks.

Notably, Irvin is the younger sibling of Sedrick Irvin Jr., who had a brief commitment to Notre Dame before transferring to Stanford. The younger Irvin has garnered attention from a plethora of prestigious programs, including Georgia, Alabama, and Texas, making him a highly sought-after talent in the upcoming recruiting cycle.
