Novi Detroit Catholic Central Pitcher Overcomes Adversity to Lead Team to Victory

Landin Bonnell faced a significant challenge on June 3, questioning whether he should pitch for Novi Detroit Catholic Central in their Division 1 regional semifinal against Northville. Just a day prior, during practice, a wild pitch struck him in the head, resulting in a broken tooth and an emergency root canal procedure. Despite sporting a bruise above his right eye, Bonnell was determined to take the mound. “I was questioning what would be the best thing for me to do for the team,” he explained, emphasizing his commitment to the game. “I just told my coach that I’d be good to go and ready to make the start.”

And Bonnell delivered. He struck out six batters over 93 pitches, pitching 5⅓ innings before being relieved by Dominic Recchione, leading the Shamrocks to a 5-3 victory. Bonnell allowed six hits, issued one walk, and conceded just one earned run—a solo home run from Northville's Nate Van Dis. With this win, the Shamrocks (25-12) advanced to their first regional final since 2021, where they will face Mason on Saturday at 10 a.m.

“How about Landin Bonnell taking a ball to the head yesterday, getting emergency root canal surgery, and coming in this morning to say he wanted the ball?” praised CC coach Ryan Rogowski. He commended the team's resolve, noting that they emphasize mental toughness and resilience, especially during high-pressure moments.

The Mustangs (12-18) showed determination, refusing to be overwhelmed even after falling behind 5-0. Following Van Dis' homer, they scored two runs in the sixth inning, igniting a late-game rally. In a tense seventh inning, right fielder Gavin Swinea made a crucial catch to secure the win. “We had a chance to put them away, but Northville kept grinding away,” Rogowski reflected. “But I’m proud of my guys for not giving up.”

As the Shamrocks look ahead to their upcoming game, they carry the momentum of their recent victory. Coach Rogowski acknowledged the respect he has for both Novi and Northville, stating that their past challenges have only made the team stronger. “This wasn’t revenge or anything,” he remarked, highlighting how these experiences shaped their journey. Ready to confront whatever lies ahead, the Shamrocks aim to finish strong in the postseason.
