Oak Hills and Anderson Advance to OHSAA Regional Finals
The Ohio High School Athletic Association baseball playoffs continued on June 3, with several teams securing their spots in the regional finals as they vie for a chance to compete in the state tournament. In Division I, St. Xavier faced Elder while Mason took on Oak Hills in the Region 4 semifinals. In Region 3, Moeller met Centerville, and the Division II bracket featured Anderson against Worthington Kilbourne and Loveland facing Harrison.
In an exciting showdown, Oak Hills triumphed over Mason with an 11-5 victory, driven by a standout performance from junior Luke Wardwell. Wardwell collected three hits and knocked in six runs, propelling Oak Hills to their first regional championship opportunity since 1981. The Highlanders, who improved their record to 23-7, overcame a 4-1 deficit by scoring 10 runs in the final three innings, avenging two previous losses to Mason (19-11) that cost them the Greater Miami Conference title.
The game began with Oak Hills taking an early lead, thanks to a run from Adam Williamson. However, Mason responded aggressively, scoring four runs in the third inning. Despite the setback, Oak Hills rallied, scoring three runs in the fifth to tie the game, and eventually pulled ahead in the sixth inning with a two-run double from Wardwell. The Highlanders added four more runs in the seventh, solidifying their win.
In Division II, the upcoming regional final will feature a rematch between Anderson and Harrison. Both teams secured tight 2-1 victories in their respective semifinals, with Anderson overcoming Worthington Kilbourne and Harrison defeating Loveland. Anderson’s Grant Fyffe delivered a stellar complete game performance, while Harrison displayed resilience to come from behind against Loveland.
Fans can look forward to the Anderson vs. Harrison matchup set for 5 p.m. on June 4, as both teams aim to advance to the OHSAA state semifinals.
