Pete Alonso is the first baseman for the Baltimore Orioles for at least the next five years.
The All-Star signed a $155 million contract with the AL East club during the offseason, leaving the New York Mets after spending the first seven seasons of his career in Queens.
Alonso's presence leaves another Orioles position player without a role on the team when he returns from injury.
Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller wrote Wednesday that the 29-year-old first baseman is Baltimore's most likely trade candidate.
"Goodness only knows why they held onto [Ryan] Mountcastle after signing Pete Alonso, but regardless of whether the O's are buying or selling, he is one of the most obvious trade candidates out there—provided he makes it back from his broken foot in time to make an impact in the weeks leading up to the deadline," Miller wrote.
Trading Mountcastle makes logical sense for O's
The Orioles tendered a contract to Mountcastle during the offseason after he was limited to just 89 games in 2025 due to a hamstring strain. Believe it or not, Baltimore offered him the contract after Alonso was signed.
It took just eight games for the 29-year-old to land on the injured list this season, as he could be out until after the All-Star break with a broken foot.

When healthy, Mountcastle is a good source of power, hitting a career high 33 home runs in 2023.
Injuries are a concern, but any club that acquires him can turn down his 2027 option if he doesn't perform.
