Panthers Coach Dave Canales Undergoes Skin Cancer Procedure
Panthers head coach Dave Canales, spotted on Tuesday with a Band-Aid on his nose, disclosed that he recently had a skin cancer procedure. Canales explained that during a routine skin cancer screening organized by the team, a small lesion on his nose was identified as basal cell carcinoma.
"It's a good reminder not to take these things for granted," Canales stated, as reported by the Associated Press. He expressed gratitude that the cancerous spot was successfully removed, emphasizing the importance of regular check-ups.
Basal cell carcinoma is recognized as the most prevalent type of skin cancer. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, it is "highly curable, slow-growing, and rarely spreads to other parts of the body." At 45 years old, Canales shared that his awareness of skin cancer is heightened due to his mother having faced the same condition in her 40s.
In light of his experiences, Canales has developed a strong habit of using sunscreen. "You can imagine a Southern California kid playing outdoor sports and then getting into coaching, right?" he remarked, highlighting the importance of sun protection for those in outdoor professions.
In related news, the Food and Drug Administration announced on Tuesday that it has broadened its list of permitted sunscreen ingredients to include bemotrizinol, a compound that has gained popularity in Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia.
