Patriots Considered Prime Destination for Giants’ $31 Million Edge Rusher
The New England Patriots recently made a significant move to strengthen their offense by acquiring wide receiver A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, attention turns to the defensive lineup, where the team is reportedly eyeing talented edge rushers who could benefit from a fresh start.
According to Greg Auman from Fox Sports, Kayvon Thibodeaux, a starting edge rusher for the New York Giants, could be an ideal addition to the Patriots. At just 25 years old and currently playing under a fifth-year option worth $14.8 million, Thibodeaux finds himself in a crowded Giants defensive lineup, which includes standout players like Brian Burns and second-year sensation Abdul Carter.
Auman noted, “Thibodeaux has missed 12 games over the last two seasons, totaling only eight sacks (including 2.5 last year), but a team needing help at edge would be hoping to get the player who had 11.5 sacks in 2023.” Given the Giants' depth at the position, a trade could be a feasible solution, especially considering the financial implications of Thibodeaux's salary for a rotational player.
Despite earlier speculation that Thibodeaux might be traded during the NFL Draft, the Giants chose to retain the former first-round pick. While his past two seasons have been marred by injuries, his potential remains high, and the Patriots might see an opportunity to unlock his skills in their system.
With a new defensive analyst in Shane Bowen, formerly with the Giants, New England appears to be an attractive option for Thibodeaux as they look to bolster their defensive strategies ahead of the upcoming season.
