The Pittsburgh Pirates turned to Paul Skenes on Saturday in hopes of evening up their series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
However, Skenes struggled as he gave up a leadoff home run to George Springer, and finished the game giving up four earned runs on nine hits in five innings. It was the most hits he’s given up in his MLB career, and he believes there was a couple of mistakes he made.
“The Blue Jays) did a good job today. Watching a couple of the pitches, just kind of got to tip your cap,” Skenes said postgame on Saturday. “… There was good and bad. I need to get ahead in counts. I wasn’t super unhappy with some of the execution on some of the pitches. But could have executed a number of them better. I’ll have to rewatch (the game) again. But I think similar to last week (against the Philadelphia Phillies), probably not as bad as the line would suggest.”
Skenes felt like he needed to execute better, not saying his pitchers were bad, but he knew he could’ve been better.
After the rough outing, Skenes is 6-4 with a 3.00 ERA in 11 starts this season.
The Pirates were looking to avoid a series sweep by the Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon before beginning a four-game home series against the Chicago Cubs.
