Petersburg Secures Historic First State Softball Championship

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — After years of near misses, the Petersburg Vikings have finally claimed their first state softball championship. The Vikings (28-5) triumphed over Logan in a nail-biting Class AA final on Friday, securing a 6-5 victory at Little Creek Park.

"A long time coming, it’s been 40 years since a state championship," said Petersburg manager Bubba Hedrick. "These girls deserve this. We’ve been playing for a little respect too. We feel like we’ve been slighted a little bit, and the only way you fix that is win."

Petersburg's journey to this historic title was marked by their remarkable resilience. Throughout the tournament, the Vikings found ways to rally back from behind; in three of their four games, they either faced deficits or were tied before ultimately winning. Their opening match against Lincoln was particularly memorable, where they rallied from 9-0 and 12-4 down to secure a dramatic 14-12 win after enduring multiple weather delays.

Miley Tingler, named the Class AA tournament Most Valuable Player, played a pivotal role in the championship run, contributing at least two hits in each game and finishing the tournament with a stellar 9 for 13 performance, including 10 RBIs. In the final, as the Vikings faced a 5-3 deficit in the sixth inning, they managed to tie the game thanks to Ashlin Brumfield's two-out double. A crucial catch by Shyane Tawney then prevented any further scoring from Logan.

The decisive moment came in the seventh inning when Petersburg loaded the bases, leading to an error and an intentional walk that set the stage for Ella Markwell’s winning groundout. Gracie Carpenter, who pitched effectively throughout the game, helped seal the victory by retiring the side in order in the final frame.

With this win, Petersburg has not only made history in their softball program but has also brought a much-anticipated championship back to the community, marking the school's first state title in any sport since 1986. "Anytime you win a championship, I think that’s just a boost for the community," Hedrick remarked. "Everybody gets behind you and they rally for you. We’re gonna celebrate it, and we’re gonna enjoy it for a while."
