Welcome to the 5/17 edition of the PhHN Daily!

The Philadelphia Flyers’ season is now over, and the dust has now settled on what was an incredible season for the Flyers. So, it’s time to join the offseason and start following other league headlines.

Before we get into the stories, I wanted to say a quick thank you. This year has been a truly special experience for me, getting to cover my first full year of Flyers hockey and second season on the beat. It’s an opportunity that I do not take for granted, and I am beyond grateful to be in this position.

Thank you to everyone who has followed along this year, read the stories, passed them along, and even interacted on social media or in the comments here. Even if I have not responded to every comment, I see them all and appreciate every single one.

This past season, I feel like the quality of the content has grown greatly, and I am looking forward to writing even better content going forward.

Now, getting into the content of the story.

We have not done a daily since the Flyers held their exit interviews, so we look at all of the stories coming out of Voorhees during the final 3 days.

Around the league, we look at two big swings attempted by the Minnesota Wild. We also look at a New Jersey Devils doomsday scenario, and the best 2 words in sports that may not sound so sweet right about now for one fanbase.

Get it all on the 5/17 edition of the PhHN Daily!

Philadelphia Flyers

Philly Hockey Now: The Philadelphia Flyers’ season is done. Players are out of the building, and now it’s time for management and the coaching staff to prepare for next season. Before the players left, they addressed the media one last time. The common theme: a hunger for more.

The next day, Rick Tocchet addressed the media and had that same hunger his players did. Tocchet expressed his excitement for year 2 and how the Flyers can take that next step. Among other things, Tocchet also addressed his relationship with Matvei Michkov, one that has been under a microscope all season. The Flyers coach gave the young winger his stamp of approval.

Do you know who else did? Flyers’ GM Danny Briere, who spoke the following day. He made it clear that the plan hasn’t changed, and Michkov is very much a part of the future, backing the young star.

Briere also revealed a laundry list of injuries via a press release on Thursday before he even took the podium. The Flyers were fighting through a lot.

Among the other things mentioned, Briere gave some insight into what this offseason may look like for the team, Philly becoming a hockey destination once again, and how 3 rookies came into Philadelphia with no guarantees and earned their right to stay all season, even if they initially had a different plan.

NHL Trade Rumors & News

Let’s start with w a bang.

The Minnesota Wild and GM Bill Guerin were active at the deadline, but things never really played out blockbuster-wise. Of course, if you don’t count their trade for Quinn Hughes earlier in the season.

New Jersey Hockey Now: First, it was reported that the Wild tried to solidify their future with Quinn Hughes, attempting to land his brother Luke from the New Jersey Devilsthis past deadline. A lot has been made about the Hughes brothers teaming up in Jersey. It looks like Billy G wanted to flip the script and make it happen in Minnesota.

The Athletic ($): That’s not the only blicbuster Guerin tried to pull off. Per Michael Russo of The Athletic, the Wild attempted to acquire St. Louis Blues center Robert Thomas in exchange for prospect Danila Yurov and G Jesper Wallstedt. The Blues said no.

I wonder if the Blues beleive that Thomas is prime Gretzy. Between that package and the reported Buffalo Sabres mega-deal, it’s hard to understand how they said no to either.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Going back to Jersey, our friend James Nichols teased a trade idea swapping Nico Hischier for Quinn Hughes. The Thought: The Devils have 2 1Cs, and the Wild need one. After that, Nichols listed a few 2C options for the Devils in the event of a nuclear trade.

Montreal Hockey Now: The Best two words in sports may not sound too sweet to Montreal Canadiens fans right now. Montreal was bested by the Buffalo Sabres in Game 6, forcing Game 7 back in Buffalo.
