Phil Mickelson Resigns from Golf Club Following Misconduct Allegations

A lawyer representing Phil Mickelson confirmed that the renowned golfer has stepped down from a country club near San Diego amid allegations of inappropriate behavior involving a female staff member. Golf Digest reported last week that Mickelson was no longer affiliated with The Farms Country Club, where he was reportedly asked to leave during a golfing session after the allegations surfaced.

Tom Clare, Mickelson's defamation attorney, stated that the golfer's resignation from the club followed an incident where he allegedly made nonconsensual physical contact with a female employee. The woman promptly reported the incident to her supervisors, leading to an internal investigation by the club that resulted in Mickelson being confronted and asked to exit the premises.

The Farms Country Club issued a statement to Golf Digest, emphasizing their commitment to the safety of their staff and members. “Following a staff member report of member misconduct, the club provided immediate and ongoing support to the staff member, conducted a thorough independent investigation of the incident and took decisive action. This individual is no longer a member of The Farms Golf Club,” the statement read.

The situation unfolds during a challenging time for Mickelson, who recently withdrew from both the Masters and PGA Championship due to a family health issue, limiting his participation to just one of the nine LIV Golf events this season. Notably, the U.S. Open, a tournament he has finished as runner-up six times, is taking place this weekend, but Mickelson is not eligible to compete after exhausting all exemptions.

A representative for Mickelson remarked, “Any misunderstanding has been cleared up. Phil continues to attend to a family health matter and is uncertain when he will be able to return to professional golf.” This incident comes on the heels of Mickelson's controversial comments about Saudi Arabia in early 2022, which led to the loss of significant sponsorships.
