Keith Mitchell Makes Waves at U.S. Open with Historic Comeback
Keith Mitchell faced a challenging start at the U.S. Open, carding a surprising score of 41 on the back nine at Shinnecock Hills. Given the tough conditions, he would have gladly accepted an even-par 70 after that rocky beginning. Unfortunately for Mitchell, his round commenced with a double bogey on the par-4 10th hole, which was just the beginning of his struggles.
As he continued, Mitchell dropped additional strokes at the 11th, 13th, 14th, and 16th holes, ending his first nine with a daunting six-over par. However, the story took a dramatic turn when he stepped onto the par-4 1st hole. He drove his ball close to the green, pitched to 11 feet, and successfully made his birdie putt. This marked the beginning of an impressive comeback.
Mitchell quickly regained his momentum, sinking birdies on the 3rd and 4th holes and then achieving an eagle on the par-5 5th, where he hit his approach from 229 yards to just 12 feet. After five consecutive 3s, he managed to reduce his score to one over par. His impressive performance continued with pars on the 6th, 7th, and 8th holes, before finishing the front nine with another birdie on the 9th, completing it in an astonishing 29 strokes.
Notably, Mitchell's round ended with a score of 70, making him the first player in U.S. Open history to shoot a score of 40 or worse on one nine while breaking 30 on the other. His 29 on the front nine also ties the record for the lowest nine-hole score at Shinnecock Hills, a mark previously set by Neal Lancaster in 1995.
Despite the complexities of the course and the windy conditions, where players faced significant challenges, Mitchell's resilience shone through. "It’s just a difficult day," noted Brooks Koepka after his round. Rory McIlroy echoed similar sentiments, stating, "Anything under par or anything around even par is a good score." Mitchell exemplified the determination required to remain competitive at this prestigious event.
