Phillies' Trea Turner Faces Tough Week After Another Hit-by-Pitch Incident

Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner has endured a challenging week, marked by injuries that have forced him out of games. It began on Monday when he was hit by a pitch on his right wrist during a matchup against the Miami Marlins, sidelining him for the following day's game at Citizens Bank Park.

The situation worsened on Thursday when Turner faced the New York Mets, taking a pitch to his leg that resulted in a right calf contusion. Although he initially stayed in the game and contributed to the scoring with an RBI single from Alec Bohm, he later exited, marking his second game missed this week.

Despite Turner's struggles at the plate this season, he remains a fan favorite, ranking seventh among all qualified shortstops in fWAR since joining the Phillies in 2023. However, his offensive performance has dipped significantly, as his .608 OPS places him 147th out of 157 qualified batters. Once a consistent .293 hitter, Turner is currently batting just .223 in 296 at-bats.

Phillies manager Don Mattingly expressed concern over Turner's ability to run the bases effectively. "He was having trouble putting pressure, pushing off," Mattingly noted. He added that due to Turner’s history with leg injuries, he felt the player was becoming a liability on defense and suggested that a day off might be necessary.

In Turner's absence during the team's recent 6-4 loss, Edmundo Sosa moved from left field to shortstop, while Justin Crawford took over in center field. This rapid reshuffling raises questions about the team’s lineup if Turner's difficulties persist.
