Pirates Fall to Marlins as Bullpen Struggles
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates faced a tough challenge on Friday night, ultimately succumbing to the Miami Marlins with an 8-3 defeat at PNC Park. After entering the game tied, the Pirates' bullpen allowed six runs, sealing their fate.
The scoring began in the bottom of the third when Endy Rodríguez ignited the Pirates' offense with a double to right-center. He later crossed home plate on Jared Triolo's single, giving the Pirates (35-35) a 1-0 lead. However, the Marlins (35-35) responded in the fifth, with Javier Sanoja's groundout tying the game and Kyle Stowers driving in the go-ahead run with a hit to right.
Rodríguez was once again a key player, hitting a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fifth that traveled 393 feet, leveling the score at two runs apiece. The game took a turn in the seventh when Wilber Dotel (1-2) struggled on the mound, allowing four runs to the Marlins. A sacrifice fly from Xavier Edwards and a two-run double from Owen Caissie highlighted the inning.
In the eighth, Liam Hicks extended the Marlins' lead with a two-run homer, marking his impactful performance in which he had three hits, drove in two runs, and scored three times. The Pirates managed a late response with a solo shot from Brandon Lowe, his 17th of the season, but it was not enough to change the outcome.
The Pirates' bullpen has faced difficulties lately, posting a combined 7.34 ERA in June. Notably, Bryan Reynolds tied Starling Marte for the third-most hits in PNC Park history during the game. With this loss, the Pirates have now dropped six of their last seven games, while the Marlins continue their winning streak at six.
Looking ahead, the Pirates will send RHP Bubba Chandler (2-7, 4.91 ERA) to the mound on Saturday, with the Marlins yet to announce their starter. The game is set to begin at 4:05 p.m. ET, broadcast on SportsNet Pittsburgh and 93.7 The Fan.
