Pirates Secure Series Victory with Strong Performances from O’Hearn and Jones
In a commanding performance, the Pittsburgh Pirates triumphed over the Houston Astros with a 5-1 victory at Daikin Park on Thursday night, clinching the rubber match of their series. Ryan O'Hearn shone brightly, hitting a home run and driving in three runs, while Jared Jones delivered an impressive start for the Pirates.
The action began in the top of the first inning when O'Hearn connected on a single that brought home Brandon Lowe, who had doubled earlier. The Pirates maintained their lead until the sixth inning, where they exploded for four runs. After Lowe doubled again, Bryan Reynolds brought him home with a hit, followed by O'Hearn’s powerful home run to right field. An error by shortstop Jeremy Peña allowed Nick Gonzales to cross the plate, extending the Pirates' lead to 5-0.
The Astros managed to put a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Isaac Paredes hit a solo homer off Carmen Mlodzinski, who entered as a reliever. This marked Paredes' second home run in as many games. Mlodzinski, however, would go on to secure his second career save, successfully navigating a jam in the seventh inning against Yordan Alvarez and Christian Walker.
Jones, who earned his first win of the season, pitched five scoreless innings, striking out four while allowing only four hits. The Pirates have now homered in 11 consecutive games, a streak that ties for their fourth longest in the Modern Era.
Looking ahead, the Pirates will head to Atlanta for a weekend series against the Braves, with Mitch Keller slated to pitch on Friday evening. This victory marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time since Daikin Park opened in 2000 that the Pirates have won three consecutive series there.
