Positive News for Tennessee Amid Focus on Star Recruit

This past weekend, while attention was centered on five-star running back David Gabriel Georges’ official visit to Tennessee, there was encouraging news for the Volunteers a few hundred miles away in Athens, Georgia.

As fans in Knoxville eagerly followed Georges' visit, the landscape shifted for Tennessee regarding their commitment from 2027 three-star quarterback Derrick Baker. The Alpharetta, GA native, who stands at 6-foot-1 and weighs 226 pounds, had been seen as a potential target for various programs looking to flip him after he missed a significant portion of his junior year.

“Everybody's going to keep swinging at that kid,” noted VolQuest’s Austin Price during a discussion on WNML's Josh and Swain. He cautioned that Baker's situation could become precarious as he returns to play, stating, “If he puts together really good tape, you're going to see a quarterback-hungry team or two come calling and trying to pry him away.”

Georgia had been considered a major contender to recruit Baker, especially after offering him in May. However, the Bulldogs secured a commitment from four-star quarterback Colton Nussmeier on Friday, effectively reducing their interest in Baker. While Tennessee will still have to navigate interest from other schools, losing Georgia as a competitor is a significant relief for the Volunteers.

This development highlights the competitive nature of college football recruiting, where shifting allegiances can have substantial implications for programs and prospects alike.
