R Ashwin Expresses Concerns Over India's T20 World Cup Prospects Despite Pakistan Victory

India commenced their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 journey with a commanding 64-run victory over Pakistan at Edgbaston, Birmingham. However, the win was overshadowed by former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's cautious outlook on the team's potential in the tournament.

Choosing to bat first, India faced early challenges, losing Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues during the Powerplay. Yet, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and captain Harmanpreet Kaur formed a crucial partnership, scoring 91 runs together to stabilize the innings. Mandhana's impressive knock of 68 runs off 44 balls, featuring nine fours and two sixes, laid the groundwork for a strong finish. Wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh later ramped up the scoring, contributing a quick 34 runs off just 17 balls, helping India reach a total of 170 for 6.

Despite a promising start from Pakistan, with Muneeba Ali scoring 41 runs, the Indian spinners quickly took control. Tournament newcomer Shree Charani performed well, taking 3 wickets for 21 runs, but it was Deepti Sharma who stood out, delivering an exceptional performance with 5 wickets for just 10 runs, leading to Pakistan's collapse for 106 runs in 17 overs.

Ashwin, reflecting on the match during a discussion on his YouTube channel, expressed skepticism about India’s chances moving forward. “I am not sure India will go very far in this T20 World Cup because there is a lack of power in the lineup,” he noted, highlighting concerns about the team’s depth in power-hitting compared to stronger sides like England and Australia.

While the victory against Pakistan was significant, Ashwin's critique underscores ongoing issues with India's middle-order batting. As the tournament progresses, the team must improve to face tougher challenges, including their next match against the Netherlands and a crucial encounter with South Africa. The upcoming games will be key in determining India's trajectory in the tournament.
