Raptors' Dan Tolzman Unveils Approach for 2026 NBA Draft
The Toronto Raptors are just days away from the NBA Draft scheduled for June 23, where general manager Bobby Webster and his team will aim to enhance a roster that recently marked its return to the playoffs after a two-year absence. Holding the 19th and 50th overall selections, the Raptors are looking to build on a successful 46-win season and a competitive first-round playoff exit against Cleveland, making this draft a critical moment in their quest for contention.
In a press conference on Tuesday, vice president of basketball operations Dan Tolzman shared insights into the Raptors' strategy for the upcoming draft. He emphasized that the team's philosophy remains consistent, regardless of their draft position. “Regardless of what position the team is in, we’ve always taken the same approach of trying to get the best player that’s there on the list,” Tolzman stated. “If it can line up with what the team needs at that time positionally, or depth-wise, that’s the best case scenario.”
These remarks align with the Raptors' longstanding approach, prioritizing talent and potential over mere positional needs. This has led to the team being connected with a variety of prospects across different positions in the lead-up to the draft. Tolzman also elaborated on the qualities the organization seeks beyond mere basketball skills. “There’s definitely a certain type of player that we look for in terms of being able to impact both sides of the ball, offence, defence,” he noted, adding that character and a strong work ethic are crucial attributes as well.
Two-way capability, character, and diligence have become integral to the Raptors' evaluation criteria, as seen in their past selections like Scottie Barnes and Collin Murray-Boyles, both noted for their high energy and ability to contribute defensively and offensively. Regarding the prospects expected to be available at picks 19 and 50, Tolzman remarked, “So many of these guys we’ll be looking at 19 and 50, they’re just scratching the surface of what they can be, but it’s going to be on them to get to those next levels.”
As the draft draws near, the Raptors’ front office is finalizing their evaluations, hoping to capitalize on the opportunities presented by this year's draft class.
