NM United's Greg Hurst Sets the Record Straight on Steak Challenge

Greg Hurst, the forward for New Mexico United, is eager to clarify a recent rumor regarding his participation in the Big Texan 72 oz. steak challenge. This event, which made its way to Albuquerque on Friday, has stirred up some chatter, particularly about whether Hurst received assistance from Journal reporter Nakayla McClelland and David Miles from Rio Grande Credit Union.

Hurst firmly denied the claims, stating with a grin, "It’s not true. I finished my steak first. I could have kept going, but I had to stop because I had the game (Saturday). So, I can go home happy with that." He emphasized the importance of maintaining his reputation, adding, "I can’t have my name tarnished like that."

The steak challenge, traditionally hosted at the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, Texas, was part of a celebration for Route 66's 100th anniversary. Contestants were tasked with devouring a 4.5-pound steak, along with three shrimp, a baked potato, a side salad, and a roll within an hour. While teams could share sides, the steak remained an individual challenge.

Hurst, who took the place of United President Ron Patel after a scheduling conflict, participated alongside McClelland and Miles, completing the challenge in about 33 minutes. He praised the medium-rare steak, noting, "I think anything other than that and you’re not doing it right," and expressed relief that he didn’t embarrass himself in front of onlookers.

Reflecting on the experience, Hurst expressed his enthusiasm for future competitions, saying, “If we have any more eating competitions, sign me up.” A nod to his Scottish heritage, he even mentioned his ability to tackle haggis, stating, “I can put a lot of haggis away.” For Hurst, participating in this iconic event along Route 66 was a memorable experience, especially as someone who is not originally from the U.S.
