Ravens Overcome Early Deficit to Split Doubleheader with Panthers

PEKIN — Last July, the Pekin baseball squad fell just short of securing a spot in the state tournament, needing one more hit against Hillcrest Academy. On Tuesday evening, the Panthers aimed to channel their frustration from that loss against the Ravens. The first game saw Pekin dominate, finishing with an 11-1 victory in just five innings, setting an optimistic tone for the night.

In the second game, Pekin built a significant 12-3 lead after four innings, seemingly in control. However, the Ravens mounted a remarkable comeback, scoring eight runs in the fifth to shift the momentum. Hillcrest Academy seized the lead in the sixth inning and managed to fend off a late rally from Pekin, ultimately securing an 18-16 victory to end the Panthers' nine-game winning streak.

"That's the thing. Hillcrest always comes ready," stated Pekin head coach Aaron Deutsch. He acknowledged the competitive spirit instilled by Hillcrest Academy's coach, Danny Hershberger, and emphasized the importance of maintaining focus. "We just need to keep playing our game, continue doing what we need to do and keep trying to push runs across. We can't let up. The moment you let up, something bad is bound to happen."

Pekin, now holding a record of 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the Southeast Iowa Superconference north division, will seek to rebound during their upcoming road game against Lone Tree on Thursday.
