Red Sox Enhance Focus on ABS Challenges to Improve Performance

BOSTON — The Red Sox are taking extra steps to improve their approach to Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) challenges, dedicating additional time before Tuesday's game to fine-tune their strategy. With interim manager Chad Tracy acting as a stand-in umpire, the team rotated through all three of their catchers alongside several hitters to practice their response to calls.

Statistics from Baseball Savant reveal that the Red Sox rank poorly in challenge success, with only 38 percent of their attempts resulting in overturned calls, placing them just above Cleveland and Atlanta. Defensively, their catchers have managed a mere 51 percent success rate, ranking 24th in Major League Baseball.

“We just haven’t been as good at it as we need to be,” Tracy stated. He mentioned that the team had implemented new strategies prior to their recent road trip, which yielded some positive outcomes in Cleveland. “Sometimes we don’t challenge enough, and maybe we hold too many, just waiting for big moments,” he added, emphasizing the importance of seizing opportunities earlier in the game.

The team has access to a wealth of data that can assist individual hitters by highlighting specific areas where they tend to receive incorrect calls. “We have a pretty good idea where each guy on our team gets balls called strikes,” Tracy noted, pointing out the patterns that can be identified for various players.

Timing remains crucial, as reflected in the recent experience of the Cleveland Guardians, who missed a key challenge opportunity that led to a pivotal inning for the Red Sox. “If you have one left, maybe you can prevent that,” Tracy remarked, stressing the need for a balance between conserving challenges and addressing earlier calls that might seem less significant.

This renewed focus on ABS challenges underscores the Red Sox's commitment to enhancing their performance as they navigate the remainder of the season.
