Red Sox Surge Past Guardians with 9-1 Triumph
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Boston Red Sox showcased a commanding performance on Saturday, defeating the Cleveland Guardians 9-1, thanks in large part to Connor Wong and Jarren Duran, who each drove in three runs. Sonny Gray delivered a stellar outing, allowing just one run over six innings.
Caleb Durbin also contributed significantly, adding two runs batted in for the Red Sox, who secured only their second win in eight games. The Guardians, meanwhile, struggled defensively, committing a season-high four errors, with All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez responsible for two of those mistakes. Ramirez did manage to drive in Cleveland's only run with an RBI double in the first inning, bringing home Travis Bazzana, who recorded two doubles in the game.
Wong played a pivotal role in the game, hitting a double off the left-field wall against Cleveland's Matt Festa in the sixth inning. Initially ruled a two-run homer, the call was overturned upon review, confirming the ball had struck an area of the field in play. This would have marked Wong's first home run since 2024. The Red Sox put the game out of reach in the ninth inning by scoring six runs, highlighted by Duran's impressive three-run homer. Duran has been in excellent form, hitting eight home runs in May and recording seven RBIs over the last week.
Gray (6-1) became one of only four American League starting pitchers to achieve four victories in May, boasting a 2.00 ERA for the month. He struck out seven batters while allowing just four hits. Conversely, Cleveland rookie left-hander Parker Messick held the Red Sox to one run over five innings and struck out four.
Looking ahead, Boston's Ranger Suarez (2-3, 3.02 ERA) is set to face off against Cleveland's Tanner Bibee (0-7, 4.57 ERA) in the final game of the series.
