Rex rally from 4-0 deficit for ninth win in Prospect's 2nd half
Rex baserunner Nate Millington scored the go-ahead run on a busted pickoff play by Champion City, as the Terre Haute squad beat the visiting team from Springfield, Ohio 12-7 on Sunday at Bob Warn Field.
Millington's run gave the Rex a 6-5 edge to start the bottom of the fourth inning. Terre Haute scored four more runs in the frame on Deakin Brinkley's RBI single, Wally Diaz's two-run double and a balk by Champion City pitcher Abe Crall that scored Rex baserunner Joseph Gutierrez.
As a result, Terre Haute led 10-5 and never relinquished the upper hand.
Gutierrez and Carter Murphy both had three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Also for the Rex, Brinkley had three hits (including a double), two runs scored and a RBI, while Nazhir Bergen doubled, singled twice and drove in two runs. Millington also doubled in Terre Haute 17-hit attack.
After Terre Haute starter Fabian Hernandez weathered five early Champion City runs through the first four innings, relievers Terrius Causey, Deaglan McBride and Brady Shaw combined the final five innings, yielding just two earned runs. Together, the foursome had eight strikeouts and seven walks.
Terre Haute has now won nine of its first 11 games in the summer wood-bat league's season. The Rex (9-2) hold a two-game lead over second-place Danville in the Eastern Conference's Central Division. Terre Haute is 19-17 overall.
The Rex play host to Dubois County at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday at Bob Warn Field.
