Rockies Edge Pirates 4-3 in Tense Finish, Freeland Reaches Milestone
DENVER, COLORADO - The Colorado Rockies triumphed over the Pittsburgh Pirates with a score of 4-3 on Friday night at Coors Field, marking a much-needed victory as they improved their record to 29-47. Meanwhile, the Pirates fell to 38-38. The highlight of the evening was Kyle Freeland, who not only pitched seven outstanding innings but also recorded his 1,000th career strikeout.
Freeland's performance was nearly flawless until a challenging eighth inning. Over his 7.1 innings, he allowed four hits and two earned runs, striking out eight while walking none. His ERA now sits at 7.36. Freeland's impressive outing included a streak of 15 consecutive batters retired and a reliance on his knuckle curve, which he threw 26 times, generating three strikeouts.
Despite Freeland's dominance, the game took a tense turn in the eighth inning. After he left the mound, reliever Jaden Hill struggled, allowing the Pirates to tie the game at 2-2. The situation worsened when Hill hit a batter and gave up a triple, leading to a Pirates' lead of 3-2.
However, the Rockies quickly responded in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, they managed to push across two runs, reclaiming the lead. Antonio Senzatela, who entered the game in the ninth, found himself in a precarious position with the bases loaded and no outs. Demonstrating resilience, he escaped the jam and secured his seventh win of the season, improving his ERA to 2.23.
Mason Montgomery took the loss for Pittsburgh, falling to 2-2 with a 4.71 ERA. The Rockies' solid effort is a promising sign as they aim to turn their season around.
